Expedition

I got up early to catch a regional train to the observatory, but remembered the hash shortly before leaving and instead chose to visit it beforehand, leaving half an hour later. Unfortunately, I couldn't take my bike with me as I had something planned in the evening and didn't know whether we'd be driving. So I took the A3 to Elmshorn, which arrived just as the bus to the hash left, forcing me to walk there. I took the more scenic route through the nice pedestrian area, crossed the river Krückau and arrived near the hash after a kilometre. I could see it from the bridge, but the entire area of Stadtwerke Elmshorn (Elmshorn city services), where it lay, was fenced in.

I walked around the site and found a gate that said visitors should report to the guard. Opting to maybe try that later, I walked further and reached the main entrance. Someone who clearly worked there just walked past the car gate on the sidewalk and I took the opportunity and followed him, trying to walk with purpose and hoping my coat and hat would make me look somewhat serious. I didn't look at any of the people on the parking space inside, instead walking directly to the large building behind which the hash lay. Nobody called out to me. The building had an open gateway and I could see someone working inside, so I quickly strode past, hoping they didn't see me. I navigated through some equipment lying around at the edge of the building and was finally out of sight.

The hash lay only 2.5 m from the wall on some grass, the river Krückau, which seemed to be wider than usual, being on the other side. I quickly took pictures and then went back the same way. At the entrance, I could see the guard, whom I hadn't noticed on entering, and quickly glanced away. I only stopped walking when I was safely out of sight.

I had lots of time before my best-option train left, so I went into a nearby supermarket to buy a Laugenstange and then leisurely walked back to the station, past the huge industrial buildings of cereal producer Peter Kölln that dominate the Elmshorn skyline. My train was late, but so were all the other trains, and I was able to catch one to Altona, more than an hour after I'd arrived.
