It was nice to read about your expedition. My phone is Virgin Mobile also; if you Geohash Droid before you drop off signal, it will keep the information active for each subsequent launch.
Where I had problems was driving into Canada, where I lost signal immediately (thanks VM). My workaround for that was Open Streetmap, and tracking the Lat/Lon coordinates manually. Still didn't reach a BC Geohash though :(
Will be in the San Jose graticule next Monday; hope to have a decent hash point (staying near Great America, no car) while I'm there. --Thomcat 01:44, 14 August 2012 (EDT)
