Hmmm. About 8km from Zandvoort.

About 45 years ago, I got lost on Zandvoort beach. I was 5 or 6 years old. It was really crowded and I got separated from my family. A kind local person took me to a cabin where some police (I expect they were actually beach watch volunteers) looked after me until my parents arrived to collect me. It was frightening at the time but the flag with the question mark (lost child found) was a really good idea. I wonder if it's the same now. Sourcerer (talk) 11:30, 29 April 2013 (EDT)

Yup, the flag thing is still there. During the summer season a lot of volunteers patrol the busier stretches of the beach and also mostly all of the sea for say around 100m from the beach. The sea here may look pretty safe but there are strong outward currents at some times / places. A strong swimmer should be able to cut across but still very dangerous as the water can be very cold.
