From Geohashing

Did we get within 10 meters? I think we were when we rang the doorbell. We just didn't take any pictures right there. -- Jevanyn (talk)

Achieving coordinates means "within the error window" and I always try for the exact spot. I've been on the wiki a *long* time and the only reference I ever see to "10 meters" is in some users posts. I don't think "within 10 meters" has ever been a measure for success. That's why we measure expeditions AND successes separately - both a great achievements! Heck, I've failed to reach the hashpoint 41 times so far. --Thomcat (talk) 15:30, 20 January 2015 (EST)
Eh, I think one of the cool things about geohashing is that we're so laid back we let everyone measure "success" how they want as long as it's not crazy. Though, FWIW, my GPS had 35 feet when we rang, which works out to > 10 m... I'm not sure what your phone said though. -- OtherJack (talk) 15:32, 20 January 2015 (EST)
Fair enough. I don't remember where I first came across the "10m" standard, but it made sense because many (older) GPSs could only locate you to 4 decimal places, which is about 11 meters. Besides, I think of this one as successful because I actually met another geohasher; that's one of the things that makes geohashing interesting. -- Jevanyn (talk) 07:46, 22 January 2015 (EST)
Indeed! On my userpage I just sort them as "Coordinates reached" vs. "Coordinates not reached, but still enjoyed." No official mention of "success" or "failure." Though I think I'll give myself back the No Trespassing consolation ribbon, since I didn't reach the coordinates by my own standards, and since someday when I'm a very old man I might get the Posted achievement and throw a big party... -- OtherJack (talk) 09:23, 22 January 2015 (EST)
What color arrow do you use if the expedition was torture? --Thomcat (talk) 09:37, 22 January 2015 (EST)
Hasn't happened yet, and I hope it never will! -- OtherJack (talk) 09:46, 22 January 2015 (EST)
It's a little icon of an arrow to the knee. -- Jevanyn (talk) 10:17, 22 January 2015 (EST)
