Talk:Nürnberg, Germany

From Geohashing

2020 February 23

Unfortunately I arrive on 24 February, but the day before looks to be a nice reachable geohashpoint. I will be in town for the virus-diminished Embedded World all week, and checking for geohashes daily. Reach out here or my talk page for meetups. --Thomcat (talk) 14:43, 21 February 2020 (UTC)

2018 February 27

On the S1 Nürnberg track, just short of Eggolsheim. Too easy not to attempt for a temporary Nürnberg resident. Early morning most likely. --Thomcat (talk) 14:42, 26 February 2018 (UTC)

Upon reflection and checking my schedule, late afternoon is a better fit. See you after day one of Embedded World.--Thomcat (talk) 19:00, 26 February 2018 (UTC)

2017 Thomcat

The annual convention has shifted to mid-March, so I will be in town 11 March (arriving mid-day) through 18 March (though leaving early morning). I am very interested in a weekend Geohash on Sunday the 12th, as we have no other plans on that day, and I am willing to travel. More information soon; drop me a line here or on my user page. --Thomcat (talk) 21:23, 17 February 2017 (UTC)

Have peeked at the weekend coordinates, nothing fantastic. Will examine in more detail before the flight. --Thomcat (talk) 15:43, 10 March 2017 (UTC)
The silence from fellow geohashers is deafening... --Thomcat (talk) 08:41, 11 March 2017 (UTC)

Okay, Tuesday 14 March (also known as Pi day) is a 20 minute train ride from Nuremberg followed by a good hike. Unfortunately, I will be in a convention all day, and don't want to visit after dark. Heck, if I didn't have to be in the Messe at 8:30, I would go right now - but half an hour is not enough time to hike to the hash point and back. Anyone want to visit this point without me? --Thomcat (talk) 04:52, 14 March 2017 (UTC)

2015 Thomcat

Thomcat returns, 22 February. Discussion of points on IRC, Friday 20 February. Will be in town (Embedded World trade show) through Friday morning, 27 February. After that, travel to Milan. --Thomcat (talk) 09:44, 9 February 2015 (EST)

2015-02-22 (sunday)

Options for sunday along the way from Frankfurt to Nürnberg:

Würzburg (49,9)

A field at Wenigumstadt. There may be crop.

It's possible to reach Wenigumstadt by bus from Babenhausen and from Aschaffenburg about every two hours.

Ekorren might check again but doesn't really believe he would join here.

Bamberg (49,10)

A field near Bergtheim. There may be crop.

Walking distance from Bergtheim station is about 3 km one way. Hourly local trains from Würzburg. Connections to Nürnberg via Würzburg or Bamberg.

Single ticket Würzburg-Bergtheim 4.60, daypass 8.25, Bayern-Ticket is valid.

Ekorren would consider this one, but possibly go by bike from Würzburg.
My colleague has cancelled for the trip, so I am solo. I already have a plane flight from Frankfurt (Lufthansa hub) to Nürnberg, and should probably keep that, in light of Bahn strike threats. --Thomcat (talk) 19:04, 20 February 2015 (EST)
I'll send you a mail later today with further information about the strike habits. --Ekorren (talk) 03:04, 21 February 2015 (EST)

2015-02-23

Summarizing a few options for monday.

Weather: Forecast says: At München around 0°C and possibly rain. At Feuchtwangen around 0°C, cold rain or wet snow and windy.

Ticket: Bayern-Ticket is a daypass for 23€ for one person, +5 each for more, up to 5 people. Name-bound, the first holder must also be the last and list all names of the other passengers.

Bamberg or München are my best options; could I do both with a Bayern ticket? Second colleague (who is now my only colleague) will arrive Monday - I may need to be available late afternoon. Will find out more in the next 12 hours, I hope. --Thomcat (talk) 19:07, 20 February 2015 (EST)
You can do everything within of Bavaria with the Bayern-Ticket. It's valid on all local trains in the state, plus all bus/tram/underground traffic in many areas, including the VGN (ticket cooperation in the larger surroundings of Nürnberg) and MVV (same for München). However, since the Feuchtwangen hash is still in the VGN area, for this one you don't need a ticket for all of Bavaria. There's also a daypass only for the VGN which is cheaper. Of course this one also is only valid on local trains (and bus/tram/underground), not on the IC/EC/ICE trains. As a bonus it comes without the "not before 9:00" restriction of the Bayern-Ticket. --Ekorren (talk) 03:04, 21 February 2015 (EST)

Augsburg 48,10: Piece of forest in the countryside, most probably reachable.

5 km from Breitenbrunn station on the local Günzburg-Mindelheim line. Buses might come closer sporadically. Very remote, not really an option from Nürnberg.

München 48,11:

Germering, loud roadside in suburb, most probably reachable with a tolerance of about 1m

Good connections from Nürnberg with Bayern-Ticket:

  • Nürnberg Hbf 910
  • Ingolstadt 955/1008
  • München 1101/1125
  • Germering-Unterpfaffenhofen 1148
Ekorren would consider joining (bus excursions to München are offered by two bus companies on monday). Bus arrives around 10:00 at the bus terminal (close to the central railway station). Several possibilities back (no really convincing one, though). However, this is "considering", not "will go". --Ekorren (talk) 08:09, 21 February 2015 (EST)

Bamberg 49,10:

Agricultural track in the countryside, most probably reachable.

6 km from Feuchtwangen, 1.5 km from bus stops at Krapfenau or Zehdorf. Sporadic bus traffic to the latter two, mostly school buses which are open for public. Better connections to Feuchtwangen.

By bike 20 km from Schnelldorf or Dombühl.

VGN-daypass for all zones 18 € for one or two people.

Ekorren would consider joining (possibly by bike from the state border)

Weather forecast for Feuchtwangen currently is: cold, wet, windy. No nice weather for a long hike or bike trip. --Ekorren (talk) 08:09, 21 February 2015 (EST)

I researched about how to reach this hash. There are good bus connections to Feuchtwangen. Closer to the hash? Well, it's possible.

  • From Feuchtwangen school centre (not from the bus station) there are buses to Krapfenau and/or Zehdorf at 1220, 1305, 131, 1530.
  • Back to Feuchtwangen there is a bus at 1355 and 1751 from Krapfenau.
  • Last connection from Feuchtwangen back to Nürnberg is already 1827!
Myself, I can't be at Feuchtwangen before 1355 or rather 1435. Bike option is cancelled due to weather conditions. This means, from Tübingen it would boil down to:
  • Feuchtwangen Schulzentrum 1530
  • Krapfenau Mitte 1546,
  • walk to hash (1.5 km/20 min), short hash visit, walk to Feuchtwangen (5.5 km/75 min)
  • back at Feuchtwangen around 1800
  • bus to Ansbach 1827.
Given the weather and the narrow timeline (not much time for sightseeing), I'm not sure I'll want to do this at all. --Ekorren (talk) 08:09, 21 February 2015 (EST)

From Nürnberg, it could be done earlier using the noon buses.

Erfurt 50,11:

A few metres into a field in the countryside. There might be crop.

4 km from Mainleus station, 10 km from Kulmbach.

Ekorren probably can't join because it's simply too far.

Chemnitz 50,12:

Frantiskovy Lazne, private property. Probably unreachable.

February 24-26

Will be at a trade show each day. Anything actually in Nürnberg is probably reachable in the morning or evening, otherwise I am probably a no-go these days. Traveling Friday to Innsbruck (assuming no rail strike) and then to Milan on Saturday. Stay tuned! --Thomcat (talk) 19:09, 20 February 2015 (EST)

2014

I should rename this a T(h)omcat talk page! Tuesday 2/24 in Nürnberg is quite decent, just south of a metal tint factory apparently. I would not walk it after spending 10 hours on my feet at a convention, however. If anyone would like to give me a ride to the geohash, I will be free after 6pm. --Thomcat (talk) 00:49, 25 February 2014 (EST)

2013 Graticule Visitors

I'll be in Nürnberg from 24 Feb 2013 through 1 Mar, and will definitely be checking the hash coordinates. Ping me on my user page for best response. --Thomcat 18:29, 12 February 2013 (EST)

Thomcat 2012-02-27

A geohash less than 10 km from my hotel by the Altstadt. Going to figure out the Bahn options. Time is flexible - I have the whole day free. --Thomcat 10:40, 24 February 2012 (EST)

Looks as though the nearby stops are Fürth(Bay)Hbf and Fürth (Bayern) Rathaus. The first is 1.17 km southwest as the crow flies, walk to the hash through the park, then walk back to Rathaus for a post-hash pub stop.
Regarding the hash point, take a look at the satellite - it seems to be in a fenced in area. Can anyone provide more information? --Thomcat 11:13, 24 February 2012 (EST)
Hi, welcome back - and thanks for the poke on my user talk page :) At this local site with better satellite imagery you can try the "Bird's Eye" views - it's definitely someone's garden with a hedge around it, not accessible unless you ask them ;) Pity it's a monday (i.e. I have an office to be at) and sunday's coordinates are much worse... --dawidi 11:27, 24 February 2012 (EST)
I went, but did not go inside the hedge; expedition to be uploaded shortly. Better a failed hash than no hash, and it was nice to go for a walk :) --Thomcat 08:30, 4 March 2012 (EST)

Thomcat 2012-02-25

I find it hard to believe that the last attempted geohash in this Graticule was by... me. The geohash for Monday February 25 is in Feucht, reachable by the S2 and S3 trains. Let's talk about plans! --Thomcat 09:44, 22 February 2013 (EST)

Re Tomcat's plans for 2009-02-26 48 12

I shall join you, if you really go. Let's just hope that day's coordinates aren't as far away as your Origin Geohash... although that would be an interesting project as well - but not if you intend to work during the day ;) --dawidi 15:39, 10 February 2009 (UTC)

Fine - then this will be an at least-three-person-meetup. Origin GH: no way, this will be done in summer on a weekend :-) 2009-02-26-expedition is intended to be as fast and easy as possible.
