Adding an expedition
I have no idea how to set up an expedition page, and this web site does not offer any help. please help. --ryanb 22:21, 29 August 2009 (UTC)
- Hi Ryan, check out Expedition for information on how to add an expedition page. If you have any other questions about that, feel free to ask! --davidc 22:29, 29 August 2009 (UTC)
- And, do let us know if the help pages don't help you, cause that means we need to re-write them! Jiml 23:02, 29 August 2009 (UTC)
- When it says "create a link to the page", basically, you go to your graticule page, for example Berlin, Germany, and add some text there linking to the page, for example
- * ryanb is going today to [[2009-08-29 52 13]]
- (replace the date and coordinates with your own). Save that page and the new link will show in red, showing that the expedition page doesn't exist yet. So you click on it to edit it and create the new page. Joanna just updated Expedition too with a quick and easy way to make the new page, see the new first section. --davidc 23:33, 29 August 2009 (UTC)
- Perfect, you did it exactly right so far. Don't be afraid to make mistakes, everyone will be happy to help and it's easy to change things back if you break something :-) --davidc 00:17, 30 August 2009 (UTC)
- Thanks a lot for all the help, I just noticed that I titled it wrong. Anyways, thank you for all the help.
- No problem - and you can use ":" to indent replies like on this page (and use the squiggly signature icon above the text box on the right hand side to sign your name/time) --davidc 00:31, 30 August 2009 (UTC)
- Dude, thank you so much. I have one more question: since this is my first geohash, I want to try and get a few acheivements. Do i claim them on the expedition report, and if so, where? can I then put those on my profile? Also, I do not have a gps device, so to prove I made it, would it count if i provided various screenshots from Google Earth showing that the location is in this alley, and then photos showing me there?--Ryanb 06:12, 30 August 2009 (UTC)
- Don't go overboard on the indenting, or there will be no room for text! Yes, achievements can appear on both your own page and the page for the expedition. Take a look at my user page. Look at my userpage, and some of my expeditions to see how it works. Without a GPS, the closest you'll get to proof is the satellite images, but you should remember they can be off. The key is to go and have a good time and don't hurt others (or yourself) (By the way, your hashpoint appears to be inside the building, so you'll likely be unable to access it. You'd have to access the building, or the roof of the building. But you can get close in the nearby alley. Jiml 06:47, 30 August 2009 (UTC)
- Yeah, I'm aware, so I was planning on sitting in the alley right near the point and eating a pizza, then trying to get in to the building by asking. It's a law office, so I think they'll be closed tomorrow, but I will try nonetheless. Would it be considered a fail if I didn't get inside/on top of the building, even though the hash point is right next to the outside wall?--Ryanb 07:00, 30 August 2009 (UTC)
Ok, now I need some help. I went to the location, got as close as I could, and then took pictures. Now, how do I upload my photos to the expedition page and the page for today?--Ryanb 21:45, 30 August 2009 (UTC)
- There's a "Upload file" link on the LHS in the toolbox. Please name the files appropriately and tag them (image tags are at the bottom of the edit page. Include them in your report by:
<gallery> Image:IMAGE NAME HERE|CAPTION </gallery>

- WOW! thanks a lot! now, I need some help. According to the device we used we got a match of 34.077 and -118.323, but we couldn't get any closer because the location was in the building adjacent to the alleyway we went next to. But we got to right where the spot would be, were we inside the building. We could not get any closer because there was noone in the building (it's a law office and it was Sunday, and there was no roof access from the outside. So, did we fail or succeed?--Ryanb 00:16, 31 August 2009 (UTC)
- Please name your files appropriately, and tag your images
- And I reckon that's close enough. It's within the error of the GPS, anyway (I think). --joannac 00:46, 31 August 2009 (UTC)

- Sorry, is it not appropriate to leave the picture number as the title? I'm really sorry.--Ryanb 01:37, 31 August 2009 (UTC)
- If everyone did that we would soon have conflicts with image names, or need files named Image:17364623523.jpg :p Most people name photos YYYY-MM-DD LAT LON description (i.e. 2009-08-30 34 -118 the point.jpg). --joannac 01:58, 31 August 2009 (UTC)
- Ok, I understand. sorry about that. How do I change the names? The mediawiki site says to just press the "move" button at the top of the page, but I don't see that at the top of the page for pictures. If I need to delete the pictures, how do I do that?--Ryanb 02:45, 31 August 2009 (UTC)
- You can't. Re-upload and tag the old ones for deletion with {{delete|duplicate image}} and I'll delete them later. --joannac 02:58, 31 August 2009 (UTC)

- Alright, all of my pictures' pages have been condemned. thanks for the help.
- No worries. Leave me a note when you've uploaded the new ones and I'll delete the old duplicates. --joannac 07:34, 1 September 2009 (UTC)
- Ok, I'll be sure to do that. I may not be able to do it until this weekend, because school started today and the workload hit me like an anvil. but it will happen, and i'll be sure to let you know when it does--Ryanb 03:01, 2 September 2009 (UTC)
OK! on the 1-month aniversary of my geohash, i FINALLY reuploaded the pictures, under new and less-confusing names. you can take the old ones down now, thanks.--Ryanb 03:21, 1 October 2009 (UTC)
Hey, just to let you guys know, I'm going to do it again today, so I'll keep you posted. Thanks for all of your help so far.--Ryanb 15:17, 3 October 2009 (UTC)
