I had to go to a computer parts store this morning for my job, so I didn't make it into work till about 10:30am. First thing that I did was check today's geohash location. Dallas Georgia, again. Not that far. MapQuest was saying 20 miles. Okay it is doable at lunch time.
I set off for Dallas about 12:30pm. I get to my truck and turn on my GPS after downloading the coordinates to it from the handy dandy Send function that Google maps has. As I look down at my eTrex at a stoplight, the low battery message is displaying. Mmmm... I need to stop for batteries. I pull into Wal-mart outside of town on Ga-120. The only reason why I am mentioning it is because stunning babe ratio is like 1 babe to every 5 women in the store. The highest ratio I've ever seen. Dallas knows how to grow them right.
So, I wipe the drool off and I'm on my way to the hash point. As I approach the hash point, I can see it is on the other side of the road and would have to turn around and go back. I turn around and head back the other direction to pull off to the side of the road. I stop with 290 feet to go. I walk up the side of the road watching the feet distance decrease. As I get to 87 feet the compass changes to point directly perpendicular to the road. I look up and it is about a 70 feet climb almost straight up the hill.
Nope, I'm not going to do that, especially dressed in a suit. I'm not in the required 10 meters either. Do I give up and go back to work? I look at the Google map for a second or two. It says that there is supposed to be a road behind the hill. I walk back to my truck and I can see the street that leads to that road, but I can't see the road itself.
I hop back in my truck and reverse back to the road about 500 feet. Thankfully there was only 1 or 2 cars on the road that passed me to see me doing this in reverse. I find the road and it turns into a dirt road. It is a truck and I've driven on other dirt roads before.
I hit first gear and give it some gas while I am on the paved part. The trick is to never break traction and to always keep up the momentum. The truck eventually slows and tires start to spin. I sure don't want to get stuck here because it would probably be June before someone found me.
I hit reverse and have to rock the truck to get out of the hole and get the truck rolling backwards down the hill. I decide to walk up the hill. I'm hoping that the hash point is not on the side of the hill in the thick brush.
Well, I am in luck. The hash point turned out to be right at the top of the hill right next to a fence. I take a few picture and walk back down the hill. I then make my way back to work.
