I just started as of the beginning of 2011, but I decided to give this geohashing thing a shot. I'm going to try and make the xkcd meetups for Saturdays at 4 p.m. for the [[Cedar Rapids, Iowa]] graticule starting this weekend, Jan. 8, 2011.

Should you have crossed the field?

I agree with your decision to do no damage. I only cross fields if they are frozen so hard that you don't sink in or after the crop has been harvested of before the new crop has been planted. Sometimes there are larger plants like sugar beet and it's possible to step between the plants. You can award yourself the "No trespassing consolation prize".
