:Thanks!  Alas, its head was much more red and less black than that (and according to the wikipedia article the black woodpecker lives only in Eurasia) ... so I don't think it's one of those.  May be hard to tell what it really is, as that picture didn't capture the head well.  -- [[User:OtherJack|OtherJack]] ([[User talk:OtherJack|talk]]) 16:51, 3 June 2013 (EDT)

Thanks! Alas, its head was much more red and less black than that (and according to the wikipedia article the black woodpecker lives only in Eurasia) ... so I don't think it's one of those.
