Expedition
Jack, however, had no idea that 520 was closed, and decided to make it a transit hash due to the late hour and the prospect of a lot of hard outdoor work the next morning. He took the bus to Husky Stadium and walked over the Montlake Bridge only to find the freeway devoid of cars (and buses). After realizing what was going on, he briefly contemplated getting another bus downtown and riding the detoured version of his intended bus, but then decided that would be too unpleasant due to the traffic and time involved.
So instead he strolled into the nearby Arboretum, sat down by the side of a path under a well-labeled Sequoiadendron giganteum, and began to read a good book. About twenty minutes later, he heard an odd tapping noise nearby, and looked over to see a rather amazing and resplendent woodpecker going at the tree! He had never seen a live woodpecker before, and was very excited. However, he was only able to get one unflattering photo off before it gave up on the thing and flew away.
After reaching a lull in the action he proceeded to explore the unknown lands between Montlake and north Capitol Hill. Not quite knowing where he was going, he ended up taking Lynn St / Delmar Drive up and down the hills, looking across the water at the U-District, and eventually finding the hidden bike route under I-5 north of 520 that he'd seen someone take the previous week. A subsequent attempt to buy some new walking shoes in Roosevelt failed due to store closure for the night, but as a result he walked home via Green Lake and saw the tamest, most slow-moving great blue heron ever, hanging out by a fishing pier near the stands at the south end of the lake. He had a fine conversation with a kind stranger who was also watching the bird and they resolved to keep in touch.
When he got home he looked again at the bus schedule page that was open on his browser... and indeed it clearly said that 520 was closed and the bus was rerouted. He had definitely failed at the Internet, but succeeded in having a fine afternoon!
