Location
A very nice farmfield on Highway G, Marathon County, WI
Participants
WausauBill (talk) and Kathy V., an extremely willing drag along friend.
Plans
Being new to this Geohashing thing, I have been checking locations for a few days now, many of which would have been inaccessible even during the summer. This point, although on private property was at least extremely accessible. According to the sat photo on Google maps, it is an empty field right next to the road, and the actual hashpoint perhaps 100 feet from the road side.
Our plan was to hit the hashpoint and then head on over to the next town to do a bit of shopping. Just a nice pleasant day out.
Expedition
As expected the point was extremely easy to find. We had a slight false start as I thought it would be easier to park on less used side road, but a deep ditch and much longer distance to the point made this less than ideal. So, we got back in the car, back on the County Highway and drove until Ms. Google Maps said we were at our destination.
At that point we were at the "driveway" that the farmer would use to drive onto the field, so it was quite open to us. We, of course, knew it was private property, but unfortunately, the closest house is often not actually the owner of the property (many farm fields here are rented out).
Part of the field was obviously used for farming and other parts had non-farm vegetation. We walked to the back of the farm part of the field and the app said we were 70 feet from the actual point, but unfortunately, neither one of us had a good sense of exactly which direction to move to knock off that final distance. Being that the temperature was a bit above freezing and the snow and ground were melting under our feet and not knowing if perhaps we were being looked at unkindly (we did go during the Packers game so there would be fewer people looking outside) we decided 70 feet was good enough. Took our pictures and headed back to the car and on to our final destination.
I think it was a pretty good first outing!
