Standardization of graticule names
Within the United States and Canada, graticules that cross state or national borders don't represent too much of a problem except for possible confusion.  In other neighboring countries, that may be a major issue in the future.  Example:  Israel/Jordan or Turkey/Greece.  The current standard of naming graticules by major city within the graticule will be problematic in the future and should be addressed now.  Any ideas?

When uploading images or working on pages, it is very helpful to add categories to the page. This makes them easier to find, and also allows us to determine statistics, and easily see some information about the image / page / thing. Adding a category is as simple as adding somewhere to the page (preferably at the bottom). That's it!

Here is a list of common categories which should be used, listed by the type of page. Those listed in bold are the most common categories

Categorization of expedition reports

 • - Marks this report as being in the planning phase (yet or never gone further)
 • - Every expedition report should have this category if someone actually went
 • - The Latitude and Longitude of the graticule of the meetup
 • - The date of the meetup
 • - Marks this report as having a photo gallery
 • - Marks this report as having one or more video
 • - if someone went on a expedition without GPS
 • - If there was something particularly oopsy that happened, and you think others might be able to learn from your mistake (or you just think it's worth a little embarrassment to give everyone a good story and a laugh)

Expedition reports --successful

 • - The coordinates were reached, and there is proof in the report.

Expedition reports --unsuccessful

 • - The Latitude and Longitude of the graticule of the expedition hashpoint.
 • - The coordinates were not reached primarily due to nature / the world / scary billygoats / turnips / frogs or other natural phenomenons.
 • - The coordinates were not reached primarily due to the hash point falling on private land, or land where trespassing is forbidden.
 • - The coordinates were not reached primarily due to a technical problem, with either the technology or its user.
 • - The expedition was not attempted for some reason. Maybe people were just boring today.
 • - The coordinates were not reached primarily due to time constraints.
 • - For other reasons the coordinates were not reached. This is for reasons not covered by the above categories. In cases where actual memory loss has occurred while on a hashing expedition, combine this category with a user-technical-fail.

Describing the hashpoint of a expedition

 • - The geohash of this expedition is inside of a building.

Categorization of expedition images

 • - The Latitude and Longitude of the graticule of the expedition hashpoint.
 • - The date of the meetup the photo is attached to.
 • - For any images you want to appear in the Hashscot gallery
 • - For any images you want to appear in the Wildlife gallery
 • - To mark an image as containing an abject lesson in things to avoid doing while on an expedition, or just as a silly, silly mistake that will make people laugh.
 • - This image is of a pretty pretty flower, or contains a lot of them.
 • - This is an image of an interesting building or other architectural marvel.
 • - The hashpoint was, by luck, chance and (un)intelligent design, located on/in a tree (some might call it a really big map pin).
 • - you decided to take a photo of an outhouse, and want everyone to know!
 • - Indicates that this image is a panorama, being either stiched together from a series of photos, or taken with a wide-angle lens, fish-eye, magic, or the dark arts of panorama.
 • - images of Food consumed on Geohashing expeditions

Categorization of graticule pages

I'd like to open some discussion here about a standard for categorization of graticules. If this thing grows a lot, this will be a major issue for navigability.

I'd like to propose that graticules be categorized to their immediate higher geographic category only. I.E. Shreveport, Louisiana would be categorized only to Louisiana. In turn, Louisiana would be categorized only to United States. In turn, United States would only be categorized to North America.

I'd like to note that graticules that cross state/province/country lines should be double categorized, but only on the lowest level of categorization. For example, Victoria, British Columbia should have both Washington and British Columbia category links. - Wmcduff 22:06, 16 September 2008 (UTC)

Similarly, Madrid, Spain would be categorized Europe --> Spain --> Madrid. This will keep the higher level categories cleaner.

There are exceptions of course - such as Russia which sits in both Europe and Asia, but those are dealt with easily enough.
