Location

This Geohash is located in a forest in Hamburg-Heimfeld.

Participants

Plans

  • Fippe is planning to go there by train, and to arrive at the Neuwiedenthal station at 11:31.
  • Rsge is planning to go there by train, too. He'll be there in the morning around 11:20 and leave at ca. 12:20.

Expedition

Fippe

In the morning, I cycled to Osnabrück Central and took the train via Bremen and Harburg to Neuwiedenthal.

Rsge wasn't there yet. He and I were communicating over Discord, and I waited a few minutes until his train arrived too. We walked the rest of the distance.

The coordinates were in an unexpectedly hilly forest, it was difficult for me to believe that I was in Hamburg. Together, we located the coordinates. While I recorded proof, Rsge got his drone started and flew it high above the forest.

Afterwards, we walked back to the station. Our ways separated in Harburg, where I left the train to take different trains via Bremen back to Osnabrück Central. It was nice to meet you, Rsge!

Rsge

Because I had other appointments later in the early afternoon and Fippe didn't have time later in the day, we decided to meet up early in the day before those.
I rode to the train station, then got on the RB to Hamburg Dammtor. There I wanted to take an S-Bahn to Neuwiedenthal, in the best case the one Fippe would be boarding, too. I could have gotten an earlier S-Bahn if I hurried, even though my train was late a few minutes as usual (DB for you), but let it go because of this. Then it got dumb.

The app I was using said the train Fippe wanted to take too would arrive late a few minutes, but on the info board it showed a much earlier time. I was confused. Additionally, the next two trains in line were different ones and according to the app my train would arrive shortly after these two, so I waited out the next one, too. You can guess what happened next: The app had given me wrong info, the next train was scheduled some 10 minutes later than I was told.
In the meantime, Fippe had boarded the train I let go, so we decided to meet at the train station. I took the next possible train and we met up as planned.

We started walking in the rough direction we needed to, taking the "scenic route" through the suburb. After more time walking than estimated we got to the forest the hash was located in. It was, as Fippe described already, at a rather steep hill, so we needed to climb walk up a few meters, using an existing path. Then we had to hit the bushes (I don't know if you can say it in English this way, but DeepL says so at least...) for the last few meters to the hash.

My location data seemed rather imprecise, but combining Fippe's and mine we got close enough I'd say. I took a few photos with my phone, than got my drone ready to take a few more. As expected, the GPS for my drone was pretty bad – I'd even say worse than in the forest for the global retro hash. When it finally got the connection, I was already pretty strained on time, so I just took a few quick photos, landed and packed the drone again.

To get back quick enough, I took a different, shorter route along the main road, walking at a pretty brisk pace. Fippe accompanied me, keeping pace. Lucky he's almost as tall as I am.
We reached the train station easily on time and took the next S-Bahn back in the direction of Hamburg Dammtor. After Fippe got off at Harburg, the rest of the way was rather uneventful – I changed at Dammtor and got back to my home town, just quickly re-packing my bag to get ready for the next appointment.
