What to do on a Sunday where you have no other plans? Look at graticules that you haven’t visited to see if you can reach a hash, of course!
Leaving Utrecht early in the day, I got in the train to Groningen. It was a long, uninterrupted drive there. The tracks in Groningen actually ended there, that’s how far North in the Netherlands I was. The connection to Hoogezand-Sappemeer took a while, but nothing wrong with looking around in a new train station.
Arriving in Hoogezand-Sappemeer, there was really nothing else to do than go the hash. Nothing to eat near the train station and no shops. Walking through Hoogezand was not much better. A lot of boring houses, a couple of dilapidated shops and restaurants. Even the geocache I tried to grab along the way was abandoned apparently.
Leaving Hoogezand, the expedition got more pleasant. The weather improved and the path along the canal was pretty at point. By the time I arrived at the hash, I’d almost forgotten about how bleak Hoogezand was.
The hash itself was right at the edge of a field of cabbage. Nothing too interesting. It kind of looked like someone had already been there today, but according to the Discord I was the only hasher in Groningen that day.
After getting my proof, I decided not to go back to Hoogezand, but to follow the canal to Zuidbroek. A good choice because allow my path I found a small path that lead me through a bit of forest and an old church with an interesting graveyard.
After the church, it was getting close to dinnertime. I made my way to the train station in Zuidbroek and got to enjoy another 2 hours of riding a train.
All in all a somewhat lengthy expedition, but a fun one.
