Description
Malokurilskoye is the largest settlement on Shikotan, the largest of the islands in this graticule. The graticule also encompasses most of the Khabomai Rocks, a group of smaller islets to the southwest.
All of the islands are currently administered by Russia, but Japan also claims sovereignty. This dispute is an ongoing source of friction between the two countries.
The islands are part of the Kuril archipelago. The disputed islands (which include Kunashir and Iturup) are known in Japan as the Northern Territories (北方領土).
