Expedition on 2009-12-20

I woke up late on Sunday 20th and decided that a geohash was in order. I phoned 04housemat, and he was up for it too. I remembered looking up the co-ordinates for the weekend ahead on the previous Friday, and decided that this hash would be very acheivable. This would be the first geohash I had driven to. I picked Matt up and we drove off in the direction of East Chaldon. On the way, Matt looked up a route to the co-ordinates on his phone, only to discover they were in the middle of the English Channel. We quickly realised our mistake; we had mixed up the date and picked the next day's co-ordinates.

We were not deterred, however. We briefly considered venturing into the Bristol or Swindon graticules, but it would have meant a 100 mile round trip, and it was already quite late. So we decided to carry on with our expedition, and drove to East Chaldon.

On the way, we encountered a very steep hill, covered with a thin layer of ice. Luckily, my beast of a Nissan Micra was up to the challenge, and we made it up. At the top, we stopped to admire the view (photos below) and take photos. We drove on, and found the layby which we had plannned to park in.

We parked right next to a lone house, and could hear voices coming from within, but it looked as if there were no other houses for miles. The gate to the neighbouring field was open, so we walked through and accross the field. It was a long climb up to the co-ordinates, which involved passing through two hedges. When we reached the co-ordinates, it was almost dark (second shortest day of the year) so we took photos and made our way back.

by failing to reach the (50, -2) geohash on 2009-12-20# because they went to the next day's coordinates.
