Eleven PM on the 4th of February, 2010, Blackwood forest lies still save for the gentle movement of the treetops under the caress of the soft eastern wind. Philosophically speaking, either the forest was silent or it was filled only with the sound of creaking, aging pines whispering to each other across the dark night, but it doesn't really matter since there was no-one there to hear. This little sanctuary of ancient pines has always been a refuge against the surrounding suburbia, a place of peace and contemplation...

...But then...

What is this giant rumbling down the forest path, scattering possums in its wake, startling the slumbering birdlife into desperate flight, awakening koalas into riotous grunting with its tread? What is this strange glow emenating periodically from the end of its misshappen arm? What force could have created such a creature of a hellish dimension, gross and fat and lumbering like a mighty golem as it stomps through the trees? But wait... this hideous creature has two heads! What evil is at work in suburban Coromandel Valley? What evil scientist has corrupted nature in such a depraved way for his own nefarious ends?

Oh, right...it's just UnwiseOwl and Tin-Tinn (name pending approval) sharing a ridiculously oversized jacket as they wander through the forest in search of today's hash, which by some incredible chance is but a few kilometers from Tin-Tinn's house, in one of suburban Adelaide's extremely few forest reserves. As we watch, they crash off the path, down into the creek (traversing a creek in total darkness while sharing a jacket is no easy business, let me tell you) and off to the hashsite, some 30 metres into the forest.

As the darkness closes in around them, Tin-Tinn escapes the coils of the jacket and goes about documenting their late-night visit, while UnwiseOwl goes about looking as creepy as possible, there's just something about forests at night that makes him do weird things.

Given the number of Blackwood Forests in the world, we're also issuing a Tale of Two Hashes for this one.

All in all, not a bad start to our geohashing season for 2010. Let's hope that it's more productive that 2009 was...
