Plans
My family had planned a get-together in Glacier National Park, so I flew in from Portland to Great Falls. I spent Saturday afternoon exploring Great Falls on foot. My parents and older brother would pick me up around noon the next day, on their drive up from Colorado.
To my surprise, when I checked the Sunday hashpoint for the Great Falls graticule, there was a super easy one just off I-15, right on the way to Glacier. My parents and brother had planned to take 89 instead of 15, but I was able to convince them to humor me by changing their route. I wasn't able to get anyone excited about virgin graticules, but they were perfectly fine with going a little out of their way, especially since it was my birthday the following day.
Expedition
The hashpoint was in the town of Dutton, at the edge of a street in front of the high school. We missed a turn at first, which gave me an excuse to take some photos of the town grain elevators. On the way in, we noticed a retired fighter plane on display in front of the local Eagles building. We stopped by to look at it more closely as we left town. Since my brother knows about these things, I can tell you it was an F-104D Starfighter, used by the USAF between 1958 and 1969, which had unusual small, trapezoidal wings, and was known as "the Widowmaker" because of its high accident rate.
