The Expedition

TheOneRing

Normally, I would not have participated on a Friday and the geohash was in a forest, not very exciting. BUT: there was something nearby which was very interesting.

First, the description of the tour: I left the office around quarter past three and took a train to Solothurn. There I had twenty minutes to change trains, but it was too short for a tour through the city. I decided to take directly the next train to Oberdorf (SO). The geohash was about 1km from the train station as the bird flies. The way was not very much longer, though strait up a hill on a street; the Jura mountains started. Mostly I could walk on a forest road, only the last 60m I had to walk up a hill again but this time through the forest.

Reaching the geohash, I was pretty exhausted, rested and finally took the usual photos.

On my way back, I took a different route and that was the reason I went geohashing today in the first place: fossilsed footsteps of dinosaurs. About twenty years ago, they were found in a quarry. The quarry was closed and an observation deck for a better view with presentation board was installed. In the Jurassic Era, this was a shore where dinosaurs walked along. After a while the footprints were covered and pressure conserved the formations. When orogenesis started, the layers were lifted and tilted. That's why the footprints seem to go up- and downhill. Very impressive. More information can be taken from the home page of the Museum of Natural History in Solothurn (unfortunately only in German).

Afterwards, I took the next trains home. The other train station was really small and was called "Im Holz" (something like "In the forest"). This was my 25th successful geohash in Switzerland.
