But on reaching Union Square I found I'd missed the last 5 of the night... and to make it worse everything was running local rather than express due to construction.  Aboard an uptown local 4 train I held out hope that I might make it to 149th/Grand Concourse by, say, 11:54pm which would give me a shot at running to the hash in time.  But it was not to be... it was 11:59 and 30 seconds by the time the station was reached.

Plans

  • A nice, convenient hash in the Bronx! The plan is to meet up at 11:30pm and get a midnight hash! -- Elipongo (talk) 22:01, 20 June 2015 (EDT)

Expedition

Elipongo

A Saturday hash in the five boroughs! In the South Bronx just a few blocks from the 2 & 5 trains at The Hub (the Times Square of the Bronx).

It being the day before the summer solstice, Elias couldn't get there until late because of Shabbos ending so late. Jack suggested an 11:30pm meetup and making a midnight achievement of it.

Elias got off to a late start, but otherwise had an uneventful ride on the 1 & 2 trains and arrived by the hash just before midnight -- unfortunately his phone was being balky; showing him on the wrong side of the street and refusing to take a screenshot until it was restarted.

The neighborhood is a working class place with cheerful music playing right by the major shopping district that is The Hub.

Jack arrived and together Elias and he snapped some pictures, then hustled back to the subway before the rain started.

I was outside all day with friends at the Coney Island Mermaid Parade and post-parade beach drinking and carousing. On Friday I had failed to post the 11:30pm suggestion in time for Elipongo to get it before Shabbos, so I'd half-forgotten about the whole plan... and then was having such a good time at the beach that I completely forgot. Until we were walking back to the Coney Island subway station around 10:30pm, on our way to our various homes to sleep... and I checked facebook.

So it happened that with minimal explanation to my confused friends (and a warning to Elias that I would be quite late), I took off running into the station and made for the first train back to the city, which the sign board indicated was a Q. Indeed the Q left promptly, and made reasonable time through Brooklyn and lower Manhattan to Union Square, which would be my transfer point to a Bronx bound 5 (hopefully), 4 or 6. My hash hopes were up... an arrival on 2015-06-20 rather than 2015-06-21 still seemed possible.

Pressure now off, I changed to an eastbound 2 for one stop to save the walking, and then leisurely jogged through a small piece of the South Bronx to meet Elias (thanks for waiting for me!) Arrival time 12:08am, 2015-06-21 :( so no hash-success for me. But it was good to see you Elias and (briefly) discover a part of the Bronx I had not been to. I did not realize it was supposed to be the "Times Square of the Bronx" until reading Elias' expedition report, though...
