Back to Subdivision achievement page

This is a long list of regions with their subdivisions, ordered by country. Within the country there can be further subdivisions of any size. Please add your own regions and subdivisions (in a logical way!) if you think there might be somebody else who would want to use them.

The goal of this list is that not everybody has to type the same lists by hand. You can just copy the text to your own userpage. Some people then link each subdivision to an expedition done in that subdivision, making it easy to see which subdivisions have been successfully reached (example).

Australia

Australia consists of:

  • 6 states: New South Wales, Queensland, South Australia, Tasmania, Victoria, Western Australia
  • 3 internal territories: Australian Capital Territory, Jervis Bay Territory, Northern Territory
  • 7 external territories: Ashmore and Cartier Islands, Australian Antarctic Territory, Christmas Island, Cocos (Keeling) Islands, Coral Sea Islands, Heard Island and McDonald Islands, Norfolk Island

Each state/territory is also split into LGAs but there's way too many of them to list. The external territories are for the extreme subdivision achievement attempters.

France

France is constituted of:

  • 13 metropolitan regions: Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes, Bourgogne-Franche-Comté, Bretagne, Centre-Val de Loire, Corse, Grand Est, Hauts-de-France, Île-de-France, Normandy, Nouvelle-Aquitaine, Occitanie, Pays de la Loire, Provence-Alpes-Côte d'Azur
  • 5 overseas departments and regions: Guadeloupe, Guyane, La Réunion, Martinique, Mayotte
  • 5 overseas collectivities: Polynésie française, Saint-Barthélemy, Saint-Martin, Saint-Pierre-et-Miquelon, Wallis-et-Futuna
  • 1 sui generis collectivity: Nouvelle-Calédonie
  • 1 overseas territory: Terres Australes et Antarctiques Françaises
  • 1 special status uninhabited island: Île Clipperton

France had 22 metropolitan regions, until 1 January 2016, when 16 former regions were merged together and replaced by 7 new regions. Those former regions no longer have any administrative function (with the exception of the Alsace region), though they still serve as France's NUTS 2 regions.

Departments of France

French regions are subdivided into 101 departments (+ the Lyon Metropolis).

  • Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes, 12 departments (+ the Lyon Metropolis) in 2 former regions.

    • Franche-Comté: Doubs, Jura, Haute-Saône, Territoire de Belfort.

    • Limousin: Corrèze, Creuse, Haute-Vienne.
    • Poitou-Charentes: Charente, Charente-Maritime, Deux-Sèvres, Vienne.
  • Occitanie, 13 departments in 2 former regions.

Notice: French departments are generally listed in the order of their official numerical codes, which differs slightly from alphabetical order.

Lower subdivisions of France

French departments are subdivided into 332 arrondissements and 34,968 communes.

Germany

The administrative division of Germany goes: (Bundes-)land/state - (sometimes: Regierungsbezirk) - (Land-)kreis/district - (sometimes: Gemeindeverband/collective municipality) - Gemeinde/municipality.
