This graticule is part of Northern Karelia. The lake Pielinen, the fourth largest lake in Finland, fills about one fifth of this graticule. The biggest population centers are Nurmes and Juuka. Population is centered around the lake, the northern parts of this graticule are almost uninhabited. There are two national parks, Hiidenportti national park and Koli national park, within this graticule.
