Expedition

At work, I notice a hashpoint that I can just barely reach on my lunch hour. Buildings and bridges loom out of thick fog as I find myself crossing, yet again, into the Evergreen State. The relatively straight shot to the hash point breaks down, unfortunately, when 39th Avenue decays into what, in the fog, looks like a mud-soaked construction site that has been abandoned for years.

I drive south for a ways until I find a bridge to take me over a rail yard, and then head north through a strange neighborhood of older industrial buildings and newer, anonymous looking public buildings. The road shrinks suddenly, I miss a turn, and I end up having to U-turn on a narrow country road. Circling back, I drive down a rural lane that includes an ambitious-looking development but with only one McMansion standing, barns that were cobbled together out of scrap fifty years ago, miscellaneous shacks, and a handful of houses that look like they were hauled out to this strange little pocket from Maple Street.

From aerial imagery, I figured the hashpoint would be along a path through a vacant field next to somebody's outbuilding. And I was right! What I didn't count on was the fence and the gate. It would have been easy enough to go the last 15 meters or so to the point, but it would have been pretty conspicuous trespassing. Short on time, and not relishing the idea of asking a stranger if I could go stand in their field for a minute, I happily resigned myself to my what is surprisingly my first No Trespassing fail.
