Revision as of 21:02, 3 June 2014
Proposed: This category should be used for geohashers who are willing to be advocates for the sport, answer questions from newbies, or for recognizing geohashers who've done something useful. The inside joke that geohashing does not make someone important has gone cold (it had a good innings), but this can be an opportunity for growth and recognition. -- Jevanyn (talk) 10:50, 8 January 2014 (EST)
- I think we can have a category for folks who are willing to answer newbie questions without having to actually call them "important" or requiring them to be advocates or be useful... I like how egalitarian geohashing is! -- OtherJack (talk) 06:04, 9 January 2014 (EST)
- Fair enough -- Jevanyn (talk) 10:10, 9 January 2014 (EST)
- I agree. What we need is more like a "Category: Geohashers who won't shout at you for asking questions" than a question of importance. Er... could somebody come up with a better name? "Category: Mentors" already sounds self-important and implies some kind of superiority, so anti-hierarchical Calamus doesn't like it. --Calamus 16:49, 12 January 2014 (EST)
- I thought about this for a few days before my vocabulary came back to me. I was thinking "Geohashing Ambassadors", but that will probably cause confusion with the Ambassador Achievement. "Senior Geohashers" also came to mind. Honestly, I don't think there will be an elegant way to make it easily known that these folks are knowledgeable and here to help without making them sound more important than the average geohasher. Mystrsyko (talk) 02:14, 21 January 2014 (EST)
- In my culture, "senior" basically means "retired"… But I agree that finding a term which sounds knowledgeable yet equal is hard. --Calamus 03:44, 21 January 2014 (EST)
- "Veteran"? In my culture it tends to be an intersection of "retired" and "military", but not as strictly so as the connotation of "senior". I'm thinking along the lines of "veteran mountain climber". -- Jevanyn (talk) 10:02, 21 January 2014 (EST)
- Isn't that kind of an insult? As I understand it, it means "ex-murderer" and stems from the Latin word for "of old age". Who'd want to be tagged like that? Also, the has-been aspect remains.
- Okay, we're not going anywhere if I keep downvoting every proposal without giving a reasonable alternative. Er... How about "Category: Seasoned geohashers"? "Category: Helpful geohashers"? "Category: Geohash support line"? --Calamus 12:18, 21 January 2014 (EST)
