Expedition
Already the preceding evening Pastori had noticed, that today's hashpoint was almost at the corner of his house, only 1,2 km. So that was his target! The temperature was few degrees minus centigrade, so we had to put on long leather boots and a warm outfit. Our goal was to try the Juggernaut Achievement and walk straight from our home yard to the point.
Although the distance was short as the birds fly, we had a lot of difficulties. A couple of days ago it was raining 12 hours straight, as much as it normally rains within a month. The rain turned into snowing and little frost. To Pastori's horror, he noticed right from the start that the monsoon rain had made even the fields so wet and soggy, that Pastori's and The Wife's leather boots were amazed by the amount of wet mud they had to travel in. Well, ”Forward!”, said a grandma in the mud. (A Finnish saying if you replace the 'mud' with 'snow'.)
The journey continued slowly but steadily over creeks and ditches and in the boggy forest bed, our feet sinking about 20 cm here and there. Pastori and The Wife didn't give up, and unyieldingly kept on going towards their goal. At last, after about an hour of wandering they finally reached the hashpoint, with a good accuracy. That means about 1,2 km/h. Oh, the speed was really overwhelming!
After mandatory photographs we chose the easy way to our home via roads. Our trip total time was 1:41:11, walking distance 3,84 km, average speed 2,3 km/h, and Pastori used 949 kcal. [Editor's note: the energy consumption was probably much more, since Pastori doesn't have a heartbeat monitor, and Sportstracker only estimates the consumption based on walking speed.] As you can see from the Sportstracker screenshot, our whole journey was a complete circle, to get the Tron-achievement. After our expedition, sausages grilled on the embers of our baking oven tasted magnificent. And then to hot wood-fired sauna, and so was another successful geohashing day finished!
[Editor's note 2: I'm sorry. I should have informed Pastori in a much more detailed way about the Juggernaut. I told him that he shouldn't deviate from the straight line more than 50 meters. (actually 62,5 m) But Pastori didn't realize he couldn't even use his home yard road, that goes to the mailbox. Well, that is actually only about 60 meters to the side, but at the latest the Juggernaut was failed when Pastori and The Wife used the field road instead of going straight through the fields. There was about 120 meters of deviation at the most. But we'll give Pastori a honorable mention for that. And exercise is always good! -Tilley]
