In a field off Rt 20 in Darien, NY

Participants

Plans

Drive over after work and attempt to advance my Reverse Regional ribbon of Buffalo for Genesee County. The field doesn't look posted, as of last year from google street-view, and I should be able to park at the cemetery across the street from the field. The hash is in the field about 30 yards/meters from a tractor path on the side.

Expedition

The drive over after work was mostly uneventful, but I was keeping an eye on the darkening sky in the direction I was heading. I had no trouble finding the field or the cemetery to park by.

Getting out of the car, I checked for posted signs but didn't see any and started walking up the dirt tractor road between the fields. About a quarter of the way there, I noticed movement at the top of the hill and I saw a large shape moving but I couldn't tell what it was at this point. I bit further on, I could make out it was a person on a horse. Uh-oh, better start practicing what I was going to say and figure out how to explain Geohashing quickly.

Getting close, I said hi to the woman and asked if she was the land-owner. She kind of laughed and said she was going to ask me the same thing. Apparently, she has permission to ride on the property and said she thinks the land-owners actually live in a close town, but not right there. I explained in a general way what I was doing and she at least didn't kick me off the property. She continued toward the road and said 'good luck, don't get lost' and I continued on my way. As I got to about halfway, I looked around at the building clouds and hoped I didn't get rained on when I was returning to the car.

I could get to about 100 feet/30 meters from the road, but since the field was just weeds and clover I didn't worry about getting to the hash. Doing a short GPS dance, I got to see all 0's. Getting my pictures, I started heading back and about halfway, I passed the woman again. She called out asking if I found my spot I was looking for and I gave her the thumbs up!

Getting back to the car, I was pleasantly surprised to still be dry and in fact only saw a few sprinkles on the way home where I had home-made pizza for dinner.
