Description
The Coromandel graticle is comprised of the northern part of the Coromandel peninsula and the seas surrounding it, a small piece of rural Auckland city bordering the Hauraki Gulf, and a number of offshore islands, including Great Barrier Island, Little Barrier Island, Waiheke Island, Ponui Island, the Mercury Islands, and other smaller uninhabited islands.
Population centres of note are Coromandel township (popn 1610) and Whitianga (popn 4650) on the Coromandel peninsula, the Beachlands and Maraetai suburbs of Auckland (combined popn of 7,328), and the islands of Great Barrier (popn 850), and Waiheke (popn 8340). Waiheke is the most densely populated island in New Zealand.
