Todays Hashing is occurring on the side of a trip I would be making anyway, through about 6 Graticules. 2 hashes are within reasonable diversion distance. (Melbourne to Bendigo, swap cars, Bendigo to the Grampians, pickup trailer, the Grampians back to Bendigo). This is the second Hash.

Pyrenees Pies at Avoca

Avoca is on the route to the Grampians. There are yummy yummy meat pies there.... I had a couple for very late lunch. chilli con carne is always a favourite, and for the adventure of it, I had a crocodile and prawn Pie as well.

They were ..... yummy indeed. The croc pie was somewhat relish-like, and the Chilli was full of Con Carne. Real beans and all.

Hash 2 was inconveniently almost exactly half way between the two possible routes I might normally have taken on this trip, with no middle way workable. Therefore, it would have to be a detour.

Navaree to Hash Two

I stopped at the Navaree Community Trading Co-Op (community run General Store and Petrol Station), and bought some batteries, since I had forgotton to do so in Avoca. From here I would start the detour to the second Hash of the day.

From Navaree I drove north towards Tottington (via Paradise) where the hash was located in what appeared to be a property.

I was unsure whether I would be able to get there from the front, or if I would need to go around to the rear, or indeed if I would be able to get to the point at all.

When I got there, I found out that Tottington is, it seems, nothing but a single property. Unfortunately, the house for that property is located exactly between the road and the hash. I'd rather head onto the property another way. From the road, there is about 1.25Km to go. Time to check out the reverse side.

Getting to the reverse side involved turning off onto progressivly smaller and smaller tracks, untill I was in the corner of a wooded zone which may or may not have been private. It did however have standard track markers

From here I could identify what had appeared to be a track on the satelite images was in fact some sort of irrigation channel, creek, or just a windbreak between paddocks. About 500m along it would be the hash point. There was someone driving a tractor around in the paddock the hash was in, so I had to decide whether to go further or not. I would have to go most of the way to the hash just to talk to the farmer anyway.

I decided to do so.

About half way to the hash I spoke to the farmer. He was surprised but interested in the hashing idea, and perfectly happy for me to do my thing.

It turned out that either there was an error in my gps transscription (although I did re-enter the lat/long to double check) or Google was out by about 50m.

Just to be on the safe side, I made sure I took a photo of possibly Fergus at both spots, The Google / peeron hash location, and the GPS location. then, with the sun setting and tingeing the horizon a light pink-orange, I headed back to the car.


(Of course I still had to go and pick up a trailer and drive it 300+Km home, which was after all the purpose of the trip in the first place. It was close to 11pm by the time i got back to Bendigo.)
