I walked a block north and quickly found the general area of the hash, ducking under a store awning to dry out and ready the geohashdroid. Scanning around for Sempai, I saw another guy doing the same thing under the next awning north... was that him? Indeed it was! And he had an umbrella, thankfully. It was great to catch up. Due to the clouds and rain I couldn't get the droid to realize I was on the west sidewalk of Broadway, as opposed to deep inside the building on the east side, so I don't have GPS proof. But you can match my photos to Street View if you really doubt us. | I walked a block north and quickly found the general area of the hash, ducking under a store awning to dry out and ready the geohashdroid. Plans
Jack was feeling a little sick and working from home, so didn't notice this easy one until around 11am. Posted to the NY geohash facebook group and Sempai quickly responded. We agreed to meet at the point at 9pm. It was on Broadway just north of Canal.
Expedition
It had been raining earlier in the evening, but seemed be moving out on radar (and I was feeling quite a bit better) so I stuck with the plan. Took the 1 and 2 to Times Square to the N to Canal St, but both ran slow, so I emerged onto Broadway a couple minutes late. To rub it in, the rain had picked up instead of ending.
Sempai, the true New Yorker, had to head right back to Brooklyn and couldn't hang around, so we made for the nearest subway entrance. At platform level Sempai spotted something that astonished him: A sign pointing the way to the W train! He explained to me there'd been no W trains in the New York subway for many years. Since June 25, 2010, according to Wikipedia. We proceeded on to the N/Q part of the station, where we went our separate ways. This was Sempai's first ever hash in 40,-74.
The Warren Zevon connection didn't occur to me until I posted this expedition to the 40,-74 graticule page a few hours ago, otherwise I would have tried to find a Chinese menu...
