Description
The Fairbanks, AK graticule is at latitude 64, longitude -147. It includes the majority of the populated areas of the Fairbanks North Star Borough, as well as a large portion of the Tanana River and the Tanana Flats south of Fairbanks.
As of May 2008, the Fairbanks graticule is the northernmost active graticule in North America.
Accessibility
The vast majority of the Fairbanks graticule is undeveloped and not easily accessible by road or river. Approximately two-thirds of the graticule lies south of the Tanana River in an area which is extremely difficult to access due both to the lack of any land-based transportation access and also to the fact that two-thirds of the graticule's land south of the Tanana River is closed to public access because of its status as a bombing/artillery/exercise range for the Fort Wainwright Army post.
Even in the graticule's land north of the Tanana River, access to a majority of land is quite difficult due to the limited penetration and density of roads in the graticule. While the geographic features in the Fairbanks graticule do not make reaching the meetup point impossible, they do present a major challenge to anyone attempting to reach the meetup point, and for this reason, any individuals who reach the specified coordinates are to be congratulated, to say nothing of groups who do so.
