Expedition

It was my first day back from a crazy 2-week vacation in Peru with friends from 40,-73 and I was super glad to be home again. It was a beautiful day - AND it was Mouse Over Day - so a Saturday 4pm bike hash seemed like just the ticket. It was actually at the very east edge of 35,-81, rather than my home graticule of 35,-80.

I rode southwest from central Charlotte, first along city streets, and eventually onto big, wide, hilly West Boulevard (NC-160) which took me directly behind the airport (lots of low flying jets.) Eventually NC-160 narrowed to a two-lane blacktop, turned due south, and become semi-rural, with a mix of woods and small houses on big lots. Road shoulders were not great for biking but it was very sunny and bright with high visibility so felt pretty safe.

At one point a big thunderstorm rolled through, I rode straight through the pouring rain which was welcome on such an otherwise hot and sunny day. I was not worried about being hit by lightning since there plenty of tall trees around. I passed through the more suburban/built-up area of Steele Creek, then across the North Carolina/South Carolina state border by a field and finally to the turnoff to Tega Cay and the hash.

Tega Cay turned out to be a very affluent, planned subdivision with lots of pine trees, little hills, bike/walking paths and parks, and a public golf course that wove around the roads. All surrounded by Lake Wylie, which was occasionally visible. The hash was in the woods, accessible by a short bushwhack from one of the paths. Easy hash after a hard bike ride.

Got excellent BBQ at a place called the Dixie Pig which I'd noticed on the road leading into Tega Cay, and then rode the 30km home, by the same route.
