Karlsruhe's city marketing guys put up two oversized (height 8 meters) town signs at an offramp of the Südtangente, a highway through the souther suburbs of Karlsruhe. What followed was heavy criticism (being a waste of money, 50,000€ were spent on these signs) These days, the signs celebrate the first email sent in Germany, which was 25 years ago at the Karlsruhe University. Karlsruhe's city wiki has more information on these signs, in German only, however.
