Reinhard has a frustrating Windows Vista installation evening (not sure, whether it's hardware or software issues) and found some relief with a short bike trip (2*12 km) to the geohash, which was next to a major road (B7), 20 m into a field.

update: The hard disk had several physical corrupt sectors, so there's no reason to blame MS.
