Smokers are currently enjoying a period in our history of extreme unpopularity to the point of oppression. I like to think that one of the fine things that Geohashing promotes is a "can't we all just get along?" style. This achievement -- the doing of something that is politically unfavorable in a way that offends no one and brings enjoyment to the practitioner -- epitomizes that.

In addition, while many anti-smokers may fail to realize it smoking is a highly social activity. Meeting up with strangers at a random location to enjoy a smoke in a way that offends no one *IS* an achievement in today's hostile climate -- every bit as much so as approaching the owner of private land to ask permission to hash on it for the Ambassador achievement. It's difficult to do, it requires that one be considerate of one's fellow man, it requires a bit of gumption and "going against the norm."
