Talk:Smoking Geohash

From Geohashing

Smokers are currently enjoying a period in our history of extreme unpopularity to the point of oppression. I like to think that one of the fine things that Geohashing promotes is a "can't we all just get along?" style. This achievement -- the doing of something that is politically unfavorable in a way that offends no one and brings enjoyment to the practitioner -- epitomizes that.

In addition, while many anti-smokers may fail to realize it smoking is a highly social activity. Meeting up with strangers at a random location to enjoy a smoke in a way that offends no one *IS* an achievement in today's hostile climate -- every bit as much so as approaching the owner of private land to ask permission to hash on it for the Ambassador achievement. It's difficult to do, it requires that one be considerate of one's fellow man, it requires a bit of gumption and "going against the norm." It is a legitimate achievement. 64.74.213.98 13:56, 21 May 2009 (UTC)

[Late edit: Sorry -- I didn't mean to post anonymously; I'd just forgotten to sign in, back then. It's me, User:Ted. Although, now that I think about it, why would one's words be any more or less powerful based on their anonymity? The entire basis of Free Speech is that it doesn't matter who says the words, if they're true. ("Carries less weight if your anonymous" is also a logical fallacy.) Ted 18:00, 12 June 2010 (UTC)]

[Commenting the edit:] That's only true if you state acknowledged facts. Any vote or opinion poll gets worthless when your users are not credibly real persons. And making policies that affect a community is something that should require you to be a part of the affected community. Whatever that means for Internet games. -- relet 15:27, 15 April 2012 (EDT)
Last poster: your vote would carry more weight if you logged in and had a name. I vote to grandfather this achievement for existing holders, but not leave it as a current achievement. -Robyn 14:00, 21 May 2009 (UTC)
I say delete it. Smoking is not an activity that deserves a ribbon. If it was, there could also be ribbons for drinking (be it alcohol, water, energy drinks) at the hashpoint, eating, standing around, taking pictures, picking your nose... It just isn't special. Of course you may enjoy your smoke at the hashpoint, but it is no more social than meeting and talking to strangers without smoking. If you really want to have a ribbon, you can always make your own custom ribbon.
And concerning "going against the norm": Some things aren't "according to the norm" for a reason, in that they are frowned upon for the sake of society as a whole or, like smoking, for the benefit of the individual (there are several 100 000 smoking-related deaths per year in the U.S.). If you want to go against the norm just for going against the norm, why not create a "shooting heroin at the hashpoint" or "beating up a child at the hashpoint" ribbon? (Disclaimer: I do not support drug abuse or violence. Please do not throw me into prison.) - Danatar 18:11, 21 May 2009 (UTC)
I suggest to rename it into Poking geohash and to poke the people you meet at the geohash instead. -- relet 18:19, 21 May 2009 (UTC)
I suggest not, as it might get confused with the Sex Geohash, a very specialized form of Poking. - Wmcduff 18:37, 21 May 2009 (UTC)
Dear anonymous user. Please a) tell us who you are, b) accept that there has been a discussion and the deletion of that "achievement" (which I and many others refuse to call one at all) was widely supported, c) accept that from a viewpoint of a non-smoker, not a single bit of your "pro-smoking" "arguments" is true. --Ekorren 20:26, 21 May 2009 (UTC)
The anonymous user is User:Ted (he's posted on Talk:Achievements about the same thing). Also, as a non-smoker, I can see the social aspect. I miss out on a LOT of gossip that is only shared on smoke breaks. I would support grandfathering the achievement, or turning it into a gratuitous ribbon. --joannac 23:13, 21 May 2009 (UTC)
If you want the gossip break, just do a no-excuse break when the smokers do no-real-excuse break. They won't accept you making a no-excuse gossip break? So ask them, why again the right to be non-productive should be connected to burning poisonous leaves and paper. If it is about addictiveness, you may well claim to be addicted to gossip :P --Ekorren 09:11, 22 May 2009 (UTC)
The "Make it a Gratuitous Achievement" would satisfy my grandfathering request. Someoone should convert all the currently held ribbons to Gratuitous Achievements before deleting it, then I would fully support deletion. I was the one who originally tried to subvert the achievement into control of any sort of fire. (This was back when achievements didn't have pages, just names, and I was building pages to define them.) If the smoking achievement were being proposed new today, it would never go through, because there are too many people strongly opposed, and I believe that one consistent and strongly opposed should be enough to block an achievement, while multiple strong supporters are required create one. I oppose this achievement. -Robyn 16:16, 22 May 2009 (UTC)
Oppose. Smoking in public is illegal in many countries. We should not support illegal activies. And d) all of the above. e) We had that closed that discussion in the past. -- relet 21:21, 22 May 2009 (UTC)

Oppose. I can't see why this would be an achievement. --The ru 08:05, 23 May 2009 (UTC)

I'd rather see this in a category "Rejected achievements" than have it deleted all together. Any arguments against that? -Robyn 18:11, 23 May 2009 (UTC)

Much appreciated. Ted 18:00, 12 June 2010 (UTC)
