This graticule is very sparsely populated. The biggest municipality centers are Nilsiä, Juankoski, Rautavaara and Valtimo. The nature is mostly taiga forests and lakes. One national park, Tiilikkajärvi national park, lies within this graticule, and parts of another one, Hiidenportti national park, are also in this graticule.
