Expedition 10000

From Geohashing
Revision as of 19:29, 25 July 2015 by imported>Jiml (Update Post May counts)

Some time this spring or summer, the geohashing community will be celebrating its 10,000th geohash expedition. Who knew, seven years ago, that it would take this long? (rimshot)

All seriousness aside, I'll will be developing a gratuitous ribbon for the geohasher(s) who participate in the momentous expedition. As of 2015-03-05, there were 9,691 expeditions in the wiki, as well as about 30 "new reports" that were created but never revisited. I'll be tracking when we reach the threshold; if there are multiple geohashes that day, then all geohashers that day will get the ribbon (though I will figure out the exact #10,000 based on the time the expedition report is created.)

My methodology is:

I may also put together a "One Percenter" merit badge for geohashers who have done 100 or more expeditions, although Category:Addicted to geohashing kinda covers that :-)

Feel free to leave any questions or suggestions on the talk page.

Update: After some discussion, retrohash expeditions are being included. This may make it impossible to determine an exact #10,000 as I proposed earlier. Also with the additional categories added in, #10,000 is projected to be reached before the end of April, perhaps as soon as the weekend of the 18th/19th.

Update: 4/20/2015: The total reached 10,000 with the completion of seven expeditions on April 18th:

I'm going to keep tracking, to make note of when we reach the milestone without "retro not reached", as well as without "retro reached".

Update 4/21/2015: I should have been correcting for three (or four?) examples/overlaps instead of two, so the total, including retros, reached 10,000 on April 19th. I apologize for the confusion.

  • There were a few late entries on previous dates, so we'll have to look at the log and see if #10,000 came on 05-27 or a day earlier or later.

Currently looks like the 10K was reached on the 25th. Jiml (talk) 20:33, 31 May 2015 (EDT)

Towel day 10k! --Thomcat (talk) 09:30, 1 June 2015 (EDT)

Not any more - it has slipped back to the 24th! Jiml (talk) 01:26, 21 June 2015 (EDT)

Now the day of the 10000th expedition is the 23rd, i.e. Mouseover Day! - Danatar (talk) 08:30, 29 June 2015 (EDT)

  • Uhhh, .... no. Removing some mis-classified retros might make 10K move back from the 24th to the 25th, but, I don't think only one expedition was enough to shift it back. To move it to Mouseover day would require 3-4 new expeditions to be added to the wiki. I'll re-update the chart later this week. Jiml (talk) 10:52, 30 June 2015 (EDT)
  • We seem to have shifted again to the 23rd Jiml (talk) 09:42, 7 July 2015 (EDT)

Maybe we should just declare both the 23rd and 24th as 10K day? We're right on the boundary so it will probably go back and forth over time, but probably never drift off of those days. Jiml (talk) 15:48, 7 July 2015 (EDT)

Yeah, I'm okay with that. There will always be some level of uncertainty because of ninja expeditions so having two days is acceptable. It even means more people are able to enjoy the ribbon. After all, we already have both 2015-04-18 and 2015-04-19 for the "10K with retros2 because of the same "moving count" - Danatar (talk) 17:36, 7 July 2015 (EDT)
