Expedition

December isn't a great month for a drive in the country, but the rain stayed off today enough for a modest adventure. I had heard that the running trails along the river in Salem are pretty good, and was skeptical for no good reason, but I tried them out and they're actually pretty magnificent. Well, I say "running" trails but of course they were also walking, biking, and dog trails. They're nice.

So, having set my all-time distance record for Marion County, which -- what? you think it's weird that I track my running mileage records by county? are you sure geohashing is for you? -- anyway, I set out pretty much due east from downtown Salem, and with very little zigging or zagging drove straight to the hashpoint, out there in the rolling agricultural land around Silverton that I've always found kind of enchanting. The hashpoint was a spot by a telephone pole on the side of the road, and that was terrific, and I drove home.

I probably should mention that this was my 200th geohashing expedition. My fourth of the last three years, but my 200th overall!
