Plans
On this day, I took the train from Osnabrück to München for work. Taking a detour to Friedrichshafen was very possible even with generous buffers.
My plan was to branch off in Ulm, take a train to Friedrichshafen from there, store my suitcase (I made sure to have enough coins for the lockers) and walk the rest of the distance. Entering the train in Osnabrück at 07:37, I would have been at Friedrichshafen at 14:25, at the coordinates at 15:30, back in the city center at 16:30, have some time to see Lake Constance and enter the train to München at 17:34, arriving at 20:10. In case of any mishaps, everything could be pushed back by an hour or two.
Of course, I did check the weather beforehand. There was supposed to be light rain before my arrival and a storm in the evening, but I figured I would have been gone by then.
Non-Expedition
Leaving the house at 07:00, the first bad omen was my bus to Osnabrück Central being late, but I did manage to catch my train anyway as I had a buffer. It was already slightly late, and from Münster onwards, the delay only increased. The regular route from Münster to Dortmund was blocked, so the train was routed over Hamm. In Köln, they told us that all stops between Stuttgart and München were cancelled, including Ulm. That was not great, but I could still take a train from Stuttgart to Friedrichshafen directly, so that was a good alternative.
As our delays increased, it grew "unlikely" (in a conductor's words) that I would be able to catch the train in Stuttgart. That train would also not be going all the way to Friedrichshafen, but instead only to Ulm, the rest of the distance being covered by replacement busses. Not ideal, but maybe doable.
Shortly before Stuttgart, they announced that the train to Ulm (originally to Friedrichshafen) would be waiting for us. As I left the train, I saw the train at the platform. And I saw it moving, before I reached it. The train did not actually wait.
In the aftermath of this deception, I was faced with two options: Get back on the train to München, which was still there, or wait for the next train in an hour, which would also only go to Ulm, then continuing on replacement busses that may or may not exist, and after the expedition leaving Friedrichshafen and reaching München on the same day. I think I would have been able to reach this Geohash, but I was uncertain that I could still reach München on the same day. So I chickened out and got back on the train to München.
The decision was the right one. The reason for the train chaos was bad weather, it was probably best to avoid southern Swabia on this day. By the time I would have had reached Friedrichshafen, I imagine I would have had to face some sort of rainstorm. After Stuttgart, my train was rerouted via Nürnberg and passing pretty close to 2023-07-12 48 11 south of Ingolstadt around 16:50 and arrived in München with a 195-minute delay at 17:41.
Had this been an expedition, I'm not sure if train wreck, time constraints, MNB, or all of the above would be most appropriate. But since the only detour from my non-Geohashing route were a few steps inside the Stuttgart train station, it wasn't really an expedition, was it? I think did not attempt with prize poultry fits best for this non-expedition.
