The Cumberland, Maryland graticule is at latitude 39, longitude -78. It contains the cities of Cumberland, Maryland and Winchester, Virginia, as well as large portions of eastern West Virginia and southern Pennsylvania. It is one of the few graticules to span 4 US states. It contains portions of Maryland, Pennsylvania, Virginia, and West Virginia.

Description

The Cumberland graticule is located within the Appalachian Mountains. The Ridge-and-Valley mountains typical to this area run northeasterly/southwesterly, split by various tributaries of the Potomac River, the watershed of which nearly completely covers this graticule. The southeastern third is a portion of the wide Shenandoah Valley, and is anchored by the city of Winchester, the largest city in the graticule as of the 2000 census. The valleys in the remainder of this region are much narrower and sparsely populated, and the long ridge lines make access difficult. Cumberland, the second largest city in the graticule, is located on the North Branch Potomac, and is the major city in western Maryland and the surrounding area.
