Expedition

It's Geohashing Day! I was at the observatory and had an event in the city centre in the evening, but decided to visit this hash before to end my longest drought of successes since March 2019 (my last success had been on 3 April) and celebrate 2^2^2 years of Geohashing. From central station, I took a regional train to Tostedt and cycled 5 km to the hash, which lay on a meadow.

Right next to it, I noticed a pungent smell and found that someone had covered a tree with a varnish-like substance that emanated it. There was lots of maize on the ground, a strange device with an infrared sensor and a light strapped to a tree (likely a camera), and one of the tree branches had a weird cube placed on top of it. The set-up was likely meant t attract and photo-trap animals, but what are the varnish and the cube for? (I later worked out that the substance was likely a deer or boar attractant, but the cube remains a mystery.) I guess someone will be very confused when they analyse the data from the camera trap, if it is one.

I had to hurry to make it back to the train on time, but it turned out to be half an an hour delayed and I was late to my event.

Full report to come.
