Expedition

I was planning to go to both Lübeck and Schwerin in the last two days of the 9 euro ticket, and this hash lay in Bad Oldesloe, where I had to change from bus to train to get to Lübeck. So I decided to travel to Lübeck this day, and afterward finally visit my origin hash as well as the cities of Ratzeburg and Mölln. I'd come home late last night from a month of travelling Germany, so I wouldn't make it to the early bus – I had to take the next one two hours later. Leidenfrost said she wanted to come to the hash too, but only in the afternoon.

So I rode the bus to Bad Oldesloe, reading Patrick Süskind's play Der Kontrabaß on the way, and then cycled a short distance to the allotment garden. The hash lay in the southeast corner of the harden area, just 2 m inside the corner garden. Its fence was low and nobody around, so I quickly stepped over and took a few photos. I then went back and cycled toward the city centre, but noticed on the way that I'd forgotten to mark the spot, which seemed important since Leidenfrost would arrive later. So I went back and laid an x with a few stems, then cycled to the centre again. I'd never realised how pretty Bad Oldesloe is, the inner city lies on an island and the river is lined with old half-timbered houses in several places. I wasn't done cycling around the city when I had to hurry to the station to catch my train to Lübeck.

In Lübeck, I went inside the famous Holsten Gate for the first time in my life, went up the tower of the Petrikirche to get a good look over the city, visited the impressive Marienkirche and cycled around the World Heritage of the historic Hanseatic city. (Did you know that four of the 52 highest churches in the world are located in Lübeck? Except Hamburg, which has five, no other city even has two of that height!) From Lübeck, I continued on to my origin hash, 1999-04-03 53 10.
