Location

On a stretch of grassy land within an industrial area in Carol Stream.

Expedition

This one was only a couple suburbs over, literally a distance we regularly go to get gas (admittedly, it's probably not cost-effective at that point, but our family likes any excuse for a car ride), and in an accessible area, on a day with decent weather and nothing else planned. The stars couldn't have aligned much better for this one.

This ended up being one errand that we fit into a multi-purpose errand trip, after a visit to a local craft fair (where I bought some nice rocks and a very glittery Pokemon bank) but before dropping off some packages that needed mailing. Again: any excuse for a ride.

I knew going into this hash that it was in an industrial area, next to a big warehouse-type building for a company named Packaging Personified, which I'm pretty sure couldn't sound more like a generic industrial building type business if it tried. And I knew it wasn't in the building, or even terribly close to it, just in a little green strip along a quiet road.

What I did not know until I arrived in the area was that there was a little creek running alongside the road, within that little green strip of land. Thunderbird Creek, is what the maps call it.

And my initial attempts to reach the hashpoint while staying on the near side of Thunderbird Creek were unsuccessful.

Luckily, I didn't have to jump across or risk stepping on literal thin ice to get to the other side. All I had to do was walk along the paved road where it went over the creek, then walk back into the grassy area. I did get a bit nervous as I walked that the point might end up being in the creek, or perilously close, but I was able to reach it without too much trouble. No Drowned Rat achievement for me today.

I'd probably never been down that road before, and I probably never will again. But thanks to geohashing, I had an excuse to check out an area not that far from home but where I'd never go otherwise, and now I know about the existence of Thunderbird Creek. A mighty name for a little half-frozen stream of water there...
