Expedition
π π π (log from April 2020)
Only two days after our first geohash on our trip aroud the Baltic Sea, we got the next opportunity, this time in Russia. We started in Kalinigrad in the morning and originally wanted to be in Klaipėda, Lithuania by evening. The hash was located just 9 km outside the centre of Kaliningrad, in small forest surrounded by buildings. So we drove to the town of имени Александра Космодемьянского (Imeni Alexandra Kosmodemyanskogo) and parked at the edge of the forest road next to a gate. But we didn't see the worker there, who swiftly came over and maybe tried to warn us of something, but neither spoke nor understood English or German. But he talked a lot and then left when he seemed to get that we couldn't understand a word of what we was saying. Concerned, we hurried into the forest, minimalising our time because we were fairly sure the worker had tried to tell us we couldn't go there and we were in sight of the wall of a huge, maybe military, factory. After 70 m, we reached the hashpoint, which conveniently was located just on the forest path. We took photos, then quickly left and drove off, not wanting to be told off or even arrested.
That's how we got our second locked graticule. That day, we continued to near the westernmost reachable point in Russia, visited the villages of Балтийск (Baltiysk) and Светлогорск (Svetlogorsk), where we rode a cable car, and drove along the Curonian Spit, visiting the beach and some lookouts as well as the Dancing Forest. We made it past the border and spent the night in Nida, Lithuania.
