Expedition

We spent another weekend of traveling, this time to visit my brother in North Carolina (there were no hashes worth trying for). He was getting his kids baptized, so there was a bunch of family traveling for the occasion. We got an Airbnb right in Downtown New Bern which gave us access to all the things to do in walking distance. We flew down on Thursday night, but Friday we explored New Bern, with breakfast, a stop at Tryon 'Palace' (the first Capital Building of the Colony of North Carolina) and then a trolly tour of the downtown area. There's a lot of history in this with the Revolutionary War and Civil War fought in the area. Apparently, we learned a lot of the houses were physically moved around downtown too.

We went for a hike with the family Saturday morning and went to the ceremony in the evening before having dinner with everyone afterwords. Sunday, my parents and sister drove home after another hike, and J and I spent time with my brother and his immediate family. Monday, they had off so his wife took the girls to the beach with her mother and my brother (with his one year old) took me and J to the Marine Base for a tour where we got to see the Harriers that he flies and then took a hike on base near the river and a high ropes course. We then hung out at his house for the rest of the day where he made dinner and we played games with everyone to round out the evening. Him and his wife met us out for brunch on Tuesday morning before taking us to the airport for our flight home. It was really great seeing the family.

With all these flights, I found I could load up the HashDroid app before getting on the plane and after putting it in Airplane mode, it would still track my location. I'm always expecting to go through the middle of the points, but on one of the earlier NYC flights, I saw we flew within 1.5 miles/2.4 KM of one of the hashes on the route. For the NC flights, we weren't very close to anything, but I did find this hash back in Buffalo after we landed. My mom picked us up, but since we needed to go grocery shopping, I didn't ask her to stop at the hash. After unloading our stuff and writing up a grocery list, we made a quick stop at the hash before going to the store. Not much else to say since it was pretty dark at this point, and it was just on the side of the street. I did have to get out, since the HashDroid app showed my location in the middle of the street, but it was a quick and easy GPS dance and some dark and bad pictures of the area.

In more exciting news, this turned into the start of what may be a personal best for a Consecutive Hash (currently sitting at four). You can read about tomorrow's expedition here.
