Expedition

Some forestry work.

I was in Keuruu with my family for the Easter. After already spending a couple of days tending a seedling stand and felling and chopping some firewood, it was nice that an opportunity for a little easier activity presented itself: a hashpoint 4,5 km away! My brother-in-law had also arrived in Keuruu, and I managed to drag him along as well. Furthermore, my father-in-law joined us.

It was an especially cold day today. For the whole week, cold air mass had been pouring in from the North Pole, and every nighttime there had been about -10°C. During the day, the temperature barely reached 0°C. Because of this, there was still some snow (officially: 26 cm), and especially in the mornings the surface of the snow was rock-hard. Today the wind was also quite strong, in gushes 9 m/s, which added to the feeling of coldness.

Our parking spot and mark of a snowmobile route.

After dinner, we set out in our SUV. The private road that leads to the hashpoint is very small, it is actually not officially ploughed the whole winter. An added challenge arose from the fact that I had overlooked to check the hashpoints the day before and had changed into summer tires already. There weren't any problems, however. Our trusty 4WD vehicle handled the icy, snowy and partly muddy road with ease.

We reached the vicinity of the hashpoint, and parked car on the rock-hard surface of the snow beside the road. There was actually a snowmobile route going under the power line. We effortlessly followed the snowmobile track the remaining 250 meters to the hashpoint.

Our group pose.

We located the exact spot and lined up for a group picture. Despite the cold day, you could feel the spring coming in. The Sun already warmed our faces and there were some male catkins in the willows (Salix sp.).

Catkins.
