Expedition

Only 30m but...!

After a restful night Pastori recharged for the new day with a morning swim in the lake. Then they headed for yet another unvisited graticule in western Finland. The drive went by in a cloudy weather with showers of rain, though thankfully the rain halted just as they were nearing the hashpoint. They took a detour of 6km off the main road on a small road which had more holes than asphalt on it. During the last 1.1km the road got smaller and smaller until it was just a path through the fields. Eventually the distance from the road to the point was only 30m but the forest looked near impenetrable. Without thinking about it too much Pastori put on some more gear = rubber boots, a hat and a fleece jacket and shot off into the thicket.

Pastori separated from Wife who stayed behind on the road to look around and take pictures and good it was too, because Pastori was faced with burning nettles up to his shoulders and thorny wild raspberry bushes that had grown taller than Pastori himself. The area was comprised of planted fir trees which had grown dense and three meters tall. After a while of searching around Pastori managed to reach the point with an accuracy of 3.676m. Pastori gave up and had to rely on Wife's voice and so they managed to find each other again, Pastori fighting through the forest towards the road and Wife calling over to him so he'd know which way to go. Pastori finally emerged through the thicket, jumping over a ditch with his clothes all wet and dirty but at least he was happy to have gotten another victory!

Pastori had definitely deserved another swim at the beach at Isojärvi in the village of Kiilholma. They also had a snack so they'd have enough energy to drive to their lodgings at a hotel in Old Rauma. Old Rauma is also a UNESCO World Heritage Site and a lovely attraction at that. After a nightly stroll taking in the sights and a nice dinner the geohashing couple went to sleep dreaming about their destination the following day and another possible new graticule. Stay tuned for more adventures!

Pastori made it.
