Expedition

The best location of a reached geohash all year – on the green of a golf course in a neighbouring town! This is, as far as I can tell from Category:Golf geohash achievement and Category:Golf course, a Geohashing first! Huzzah!

I fetched a plastic golf ball and club and took the train to Quickborn, from where I cycled 3 km to the bridge across the river Pinnau (whose source is less than a kilometre from my home). There I left my bike and walked 420 m on a grassy path along the brook at the edge of the golf course, finding a real golf ball on the way. To my surprise, I saw people golfing, but not on the hole of the hash. I was even more surprised that there was no fence for the course (I even saw a trail for pedestrians with a bench on the area of the golf course). I could simply walk to the green from the river path across nothing but grass. As I arrived, I saw two golfers leave the nearest hole (they didn‘t see me), and another one approaching. I didn‘t want to hide; if he addressed me, I‘d simply explain the situation, and take a screenshot and leave if he disapproved. But although the third golfer definitely saw me, and was only 70 m away at the nearest, he didn‘t talk to me.

I quickly identified the location of the hashpoint 2 m from the edge of the green and right next to a bunker from the satellite map, and took pictures. Then I took a video of me clumsily conveying the ball into the hole a little over 10 m away with several shots. I tried again, this time without recording because the phone heavily handicapped me, and got an amazing putt on the first try, with the ball settling only 10 cm from the hole. (I didn‘t think I’d be able to pull that off with fifty tries – turns out I might not be as bad at real golf as I am at Wii Golf.) Then I filmed myself putting the ball into the hole (thankfully not missing), and left it there. For the sake of „causing a golf ball to fall at the geohash point“, the requirement for the Golf geohash achievement, I made another video with my plastic ball of me hitting it onto the hashpoint. All the time, I was on the lookout for the nearby golfer. Appreciating my luck over the course of this entire expedition, I went back to my bicycle and took the same route home.
