Expedition

After a hard morning bird-watching, lake-exploring, cafe-hopping and plant-buying in Ballarat, KT and I began the real work, in KT's trusty Yaris. Roads got narrower and more scenic. We paused briefly to admire a beautiful bluestone station building. Soon we were on a delightfully smooth, hard-packed dirt road. I only wished I was on my bike.

We saw some exciting wind turbines in the distance! I made KT take many photos as I drove. She's a trooper.

Suddenly I saw a sign by the side of the road, "SAY NO TO 345m WIND TURBINES". This would not do. I stopped, turned around, and went back to inflict my inner-city greenie views on the countryside. Whereupon I realised that I had misread the sign, and they were actually protesting about tall power line towers, a subject I feel much more equivocal about. Shamefacedly, we set off again.

Soon, we were there! (Nothing much interesting ever seems to happen when you drive to a hash). We got out, and discovered a mildly interesting fence with no fence, failing to protect a timber plantation.

We strolled in the opposite direction, across an actual, but very low fence, and quite beelined to the spot. Hooray!

KT climbs a tree.

In the distance, cows, sheep, houses...more wind turbines! There were some beautiful old trees, so we climbed in them.

Turbine time

As we continued our journey Melbourne-ward, we got even closer to a wind turbine. There was a very confusing set of signs on a locked gate that seemed to be trying to imply that members of the public shouldn't enter, without coming right out and saying it. "NO THROUGH ROAD". "Please lock the gate." "This area is patrolled by security". But a distinct absence of "Private property" or "Keep out" or "No trespassing" or "Trespassers will be shot" or anything of that kind.

So we climbed over and observed an Australian Shelduck. Then we got very close to a wind turbine tower and got very very excited. It was big! It went whoosh! It didn't feel windy where we were, but apparently it was very windy up there. Woosh, woosh, woosh!
