Expedition

I was coming back from my travels throughout Germany this day, and this hash lay only 3.2 km from a station on the way home (but right in the middle between the two routes I could take). I started the day in Münster and continued to Hanover in the afternoon. I only had around two hours there since I needed to get to the hash before midnight, so I took the RE to Hamburg at 7:40 pm, then the S-Bahn and finally the AKN to Hasloh, where I arrived shortly before 11 pm. After a few minutes, I stashed my large bag in some bushes to be able to walk more quickly. It was dark, but still just light enough for me to see the street without a flashlight. I crossed the autobahn, then diverged onto a small road that led along it for a while. Because I listened to music, I had to force myself to not look back every time a car passed on the autobahn – my brain always interpreted the lights as coming from right behind me. After around 40 minutes, I approached the hashfield and had to turn on my flashlight. I had to step over a fence, cross a meadow, and then climb a larger wooden but electrified fence to access the meadow beyond. 30 m further I located the coordinates near the field's edge. I tried to take some decent photos despite the blackness, but mostly failed.

I looked at the time and noticed that I'd have to run a portion of the way back since the train left in around half an hour. I hurried back onto the road and soon got a jog on. I alternated between jogging and walking, while listening to Van Canto, Simon & Garfunkel and Al Yankovic – three extremely dissimilar styles of music (and artist), now that I think about it. I was worried about the gate closing since I had to get across the tracks first, so I made good time, retrieved my bag and arrived at the crossing well before the bars came down. At 0:12, I caught the train and finally arrived home shortly later, 31 days after leaving. Definitely an interesting experience to run along empty streets in the dark in my travelling clothes. I did not pass a single car during the entire expedition.
